Dedicated green agenda for blue truck fleet

SCA Recycling UK Ltd is in the process of taking delivery of 21 new DAF 26 tonne rigids on contract hire from Fraikin, each finished in the company’s distinctive blue livery and supplied on a five year full service contract hire agreement.

The DAF 6×2’s benefit from a comprehensive specification which includes a lifting rear-axle, HIAB hooklift body with demountable bin equipment, Multilift EasyOver sheeting and VBG heavy vehicle coupling system, to enable the rigids to operate with drawbar tri-axle skeletal trailers at 44 tonnes gross.

The delivery sees over a quarter of SCA Recycling’s 75-strong fleet being replaced, with Fraikin retaining its status as the company’s sole supplier of commercial vehicles.  This follows an agreement which began between the two companies in 1993 when Fraikin signed a sale and hire back agreement with the customer.

Commenting on the new fleet, Robin Collier, Operations Director at SCA Recycling says: “Fraikin has worked closely with us for more than 15 years to understand our operation and ensure our fleet incorporates the best available technology.  This enables us to be certain of full compliance with the latest health, safety and environmental regulations, whilst maximising the efficient management of our fleet.”

“Through contract hiring we are able to remove the day-to-day fleet management issues whilst ensuring our O Licence commitments are continually met.  Furthermore, the financial benefits of contract hire allow us to prioritise capital expenditure on our core business, whilst spreading the transport cost throughout the duration of the agreement,” he adds.

Each of the new DAFs are expected to cover approximately 72,000 miles per year and will be used primarily for the collection of recovered paper from printers, publishers and carton manufacturers.  The paper is then transported back to one of SCA Recycling’s eight processing plants nationwide where it can be recycled.

The contract with Fraikin includes all servicing and maintenance of the chassis and bodywork, managed via Fraikin’s central Customer Support Centre in Coventry.  As part of the agreement, Fraikin also provides MOTs, tyres and 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.
